Terms and conditions

Last updated:

These are the conditions of the room, set down plainly enough to be read in one sitting. Reading here, leaving a margin note or keeping a shelf means you accept them.

The room and its keepers

SlipRoom is a place for essays and notes, looked after by the SlipRoom team. Anyone may read without charge and without an account. Shelves for writers are offered by invitation alone, with no open enrolment, and it is the team that decides whom to invite.

How the room is to be used

Everything placed here must keep to the reading room rules. The site may not be used to break the law, spread malicious software, mislead readers, harass anyone, expose another person’s private information, pose as someone else or infringe copyright. Nor may anyone attempt to disrupt the site, get round its limits, or reach parts of it that are not meant for them.

Keeping a shelf

A writer’s work remains the writer’s own. In publishing it here, the writer gives SlipRoom leave to host it, display it and distribute it, through the site’s pages and its RSS feeds among other means, for as long as it stays published. Writers answer for what they publish, including holding the right to any words, images or other material they use.

A writer may ask, through the correspondence page and at any time, for a single post or the entire blog to be withdrawn. Copies already made by others, in a feed reader for example, lie beyond our reach.

Margin notes

A comment may be sent by anyone, with a name and a message, and its author is answerable for it. Each guest note is read before it appears, and we are free to decline any note without stating a reason. Sending one gives us your permission to show it publicly beneath its post, under the name you gave.

What we may take down

Posts, margin notes or whole blogs may be removed if they break these conditions or the rules, or if we are obliged to remove them. Where it is reasonable, the writer will be told. Reports and copyright notices reach us through the correspondence page.

Pages beyond the room

A post may point to other websites. We do not run them, and we cannot answer for what they publish or for the way they treat your information.

No guarantees

SlipRoom comes “as is” and “as available”, with no warranty of any sort, express or implied. We cannot promise that the room will always be open, that it will run without interruption or error, or that what writers publish is accurate or complete. The views in posts and margin notes are their authors’ own.

The limits of our responsibility

So far as the law permits, neither SlipRoom nor those who keep it shall be liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss that comes from your use of the site, from anything written by writers or commenters, or from the site being out of service.

When things change

Any part of SlipRoom, or the room as a whole, may be altered, paused or closed at any time. These conditions may likewise be revised, and the date at the head of this page will show when that last happened. To go on using the site after a revision is to accept the conditions as revised.

Questions

Should anything here need explaining, please write to us from the correspondence page.
