Your records
Privacy
We would rather know too little about our visitors than too much. Below is an honest inventory: what SlipRoom keeps, the reason for keeping it, and when it is let go. Anything unclear can be put to us through the correspondence page.
The short version
- Reading leaves no trace in our database and earns you no cookie.
- A margin note keeps the name and the words you gave us, nothing more.
- A letter through the correspondence form is kept for 90 days.
- The web server’s own logs last roughly two weeks.
- Nothing is sold, and there are no advertisers here to share it with.
If you only read
No account is involved and no cookie is set. The room runs no analytics, no advertising and no tracking pixels, and it fetches no scripts from anyone else. We draw up no profiles of our readers, and we pass information about them to no one, for money or otherwise.
If you leave a margin note
A note consists of the name you choose and the words you write; an email address is never requested. We store the note so that a moderator can read it. Once approved, it is shown publicly beneath the post along with your chosen name, and it stays there until either the post is taken down or you ask us to remove the note. A note that is never approved does not linger: after 30 days we discard it.
If you write to us
The correspondence form asks for your name, your email address, a topic and your message. These serve only to read your letter and to reply to it or deal with what you ask. Each letter is erased from our records 90 days after it reaches us.
If you keep a shelf
To run a writer’s blog we hold the handle, display name, portrait, biography, optional website link and location, opening note, and the posts and images the writer files. All of this is public by its nature, since it is exactly what the blog displays. A writer may ask at any time for posts, or the whole blog, to be removed.
The server’s own records
As with every website, your visit reveals your IP address to us. We hold IP addresses in memory only, to limit how often comments and letters can be sent and so keep spam at bay; they are not written into the site’s database. Apart from that, the web server keeps ordinary access logs recording the IP address, the page asked for, the browser’s user agent and the time, which we use for security and for keeping the site running. Each log is cleared away after around fourteen days.
On cookies
Readers and commenters are given none. SlipRoom sets precisely one cookie, a session cookie, and only for an administrator who has signed in to look after the room.
Two outside suppliers
Loading our pages involves two services beyond our own:
- Google Fonts supplies the typefaces on every page, from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com.
- Unsplash supplies the photographs on the home page, from its image service at images.unsplash.com.
As your browser collects those files, the two providers see your IP address and browser details, as they would with any web request. Our pages travel over HTTPS, with certificates from Let’s Encrypt.
Asking about your own records
You are entitled to ask what we hold about you, to receive a copy, or to have it erased. Write from the correspondence page under “Your records and privacy”, and give us enough to find it, such as the name you signed a note with and the post where you left it. Our answer will come by email.
If this notice changes
Should the way SlipRoom treats information change, this notice will be revised and the date at its head brought up to date.
